July 7, 1751, Northford. m. July 5, 1771, Abigail MUNGER. (Conn. Marriages). She was dau. of Reuben and Elizabeth (Dudley) MUNGER.

They were mar. at Norfolk, Conn.

The parents of Abigail MUNGER moved to Norfolk, Litchfield County, Conn., about 1766. After her marriage she lived "on the line of the old Green Wood Turnpike, a short distance from Timothy Gaylord's Tavern."

Her brother, Reuben MUNGER, died in Middlebury, Vermont, in 1826. His estate, other than that which was left to his wife, was distributed among his brothers and sisters and "to the heirs of Abigail Maltbee, a deceased sister." The names of the Maltbee heirs are given in this record as: "Simeon--Benjamin--Jacob--Elon-- Harrison--Ammi--Daniel--Jesse."

"Reuben Munger was one of the largest land holders of Middlebury, Vermont, in his time. He had no children." (Foregoing from Jeremiah B. Munger, 709 Worthington Street, Springfield, Mass.)

    Abigail MUNGER was b. Aug. 26, 1750.

"Benjamin and Abigail Maltbie had eleven children, most of whom went West. His son Elon spent most of his life on this place" (see above) "and died there."

Daniel (5) son of Benjamin, wrote in 1880, to Mr. Nelson G. Adams, of Washington, D.C. "I had seven brothers and four sisters, Simeon, Benjamin, Abigail, Jacob, Ami, Hannah, Elon, Louis, Harrison, Julia, myself, and Jesse."

"Brother Jesse lives in Oberlin, Ohio. We two are the only members of my father's family that have not already gone before. The brothers have all lived to a good old age; the sisters all died young, three of them leaving small children. I was 87 years old day before yesterday." (April 6, 1880)

Note. Daniel mentions a child "Louis"--he is probably correct, but evidently he lived but a short time as I have no other reference to him.

According to the will of his father, Benjamin MALTBY was in Branford in 1776. In 1781 he moved to Norfolk, Conn.

He bought land at Norfolk, June 12, 1781.

"Benjamin MALTBY served as a private in the Revolutionary War.

He was in two different regiments. He was in the battle of Long Island and at Saratoga."

"Died--At the residence of his son Deacon Daniel MALTBY in Southington," (Trumbull Co.) "Ohio, Jan. 1, 1847, Deacon Benjamin Maltby in the 97th year of his age."

"he was the second son of Deacon Daniel MALTBY who was born in Northford, New Haven County, Conn., May 12, 1715.

"When about 22 he united with the Congregational church in Branford. After living for a time at Stony Creek he removed, near the close of the Revolution to Norfolk, north part of country."

"In the autum of 1814 he moved to Groton, Tompkins Co., New York, where his wife died, April 14, 1816, rejoicing in the prospect of a glorious immortality. She was a Munger of Madison, Conn.

"In 1820 he moved to Ohio with his son Daniel and died in Southington, County Trumbull.

"He was a true patriot. He warmly espoused the cause of the country. He possessed the spirit of '76 and cheerfully devoted his property and his personal efforts to obtain freedom and Independence. The good of his country he earnestly sought till his death.

"He was a decided, consistent Christian. He loved the Sabbath. He loved the Sanctuary and the distinguishing doctrines of grace. When health permitted, even in his old age and almost at the close of life, he was a constant attendant on the public worship of God and a most careful listner, to the preaching of the gospel. He would never admit that going to meeting on the Sabbath was any detriment to his health, though his residence was more than three miles to meeting. He ceased to serve the Table after his son was elected Deacon.

"The cause of the slave lay near his heart. When he was 95 years old he rode ten miles or more to attend an anti-slavery convention on the 4th of July and spoke on the occasion. The next year he was present at a Sabbath School celebration on the 4th of July."

"He was decidedly a temperance man. After using tobacco for more than half a century he entirely discontinued it--and in resisting the pernicious but adhesive habit, gave an example of consiontiousness and firmness that deserve to be universally followed."

In the close of a letter from him he says:--"I should be happy for a visit from you and talk of comforts and trials of our Pilgrimage and the Joys which I trust are reserved for us Through Christ who hath loved and given Himself for us."

"An interview would have been sweet and precious--it would have been marrow and fatness. But how much--Oh how much sweeter, holier, happier in our Father's "house where sin and sorrow bid adiou."

"The last days of this venerable Pilgrim Father were his best days. He was daily ripening for his heavenly home! The full enjoyment of his God and Savior, and hosts of Redeemed friends!

He litterally died in peace and sleeps in Jesus!" New Haven, 1847

     But joy that he has gone to peaceful rest
     So rich in virtue and so ripe in years.
Rev. Jonathan wrote of Deacon Benjamin:--

"He had 22 children with their companions, all professors, 59 grand children, 55 professors, 76 great-grand children and one of the 6th generation--270 descendants."

Abigail MUNGER's father, Reuben, was son of Ebenezer (3), John (2), Nicholas (1).
